"My daughter Elisa is always on the go, and brushing teeth is not the
first thing on her mind. Thankfully, it is for the AAHP which operates
an outreach program at my daughter's school, teaching children the
importance of dental hygiene. They provide free screenings, discounted
dental services, and hundreds of backpacks filled with toothpaste and
floss. The AAHP gives me the confidence of knowing that Elisa is
brushing down her chances for cancer as an adult."

Facts on Oral Health
There are many other diseases and health conditions that Blacks suffer from disproportionately that are linked to oral health.
- Heart Disease. Recent research shows that several types of heart disease may be linked to poor oral health.
- Pregnancy. Poor oral hygiene has been linked to the birth of premature babies. It is important to note that the time to practice good oral hygiene is before you are pregnant, since once you are pregnant infection may spread to your entire body.
- Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk for a multitude of gum diseases, cavities and mouth infections. Poor oral health can also make your blood sugars more difficult to control.
- HIV/AIDS. In some cases one of the first signs of AIDS may appear in your mouth in the form of a severe gum infection. You may also develop white spots on your tongue or in your mouth that won't go away.
- Osteoporosis. The first stage of bone loss may appear in your teeth. Your dentist may be able to identify this on yearly x-rays, which is another reason why it is important to schedule annual dental visits.
